How to Prepare for AUSTRAC Enrolment: A Step-by-Step Compliance Guide

AUSTRAC Online enrolment process step by step guide

If your business provides accounting, legal, real estate, conveyancing, trust company service providers, and precious metal dealers services in Australia, there is a good chance that AUSTRAC enrolment applies to you – especially with the significant reforms now reshaping who falls under Australia’s AML/CTF laws.

Preparing for AUSTRAC enrolment doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This guide breaks it all down in plain English – what it is, who needs to enrol, what information you will need, and how to get ready step by step.

What Is AUSTRAC Enrolment?

AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) is Australia’s financial intelligence agency and anti-money laundering regulator.

AUSTRAC enrolment is the formal process of registering your business on the Reporting Entities Roll – a record of all businesses that provide designated services under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

Once enrolled, your business is officially recognised as a reporting entity, which comes with specific AML/CTF compliance obligations including maintaining an AML/CTF Program, conducting customer due diligence, and submitting reports to AUSTRAC when required.

It is important to understand the difference between enrolment and registration:

ProcessWho it Applies to
EnrolmentAll businesses providing designated services
RegistrationRemittance and virtual asset service providers only

So, most businesses – accountants, lawyers, real estate agents – only need to enrol. Remittance and virtual asset providers need to do both.

Who Needs to Enrol with AUSTRAC?

You must enrol with AUSTRAC if your business provides one or more designated services with a geographical link to Australia.

This has expanded significantly. Under the AML/CTF Amendment Act 2024, a broad new group of businesses – often called “Tranche 2 entities” – now fall under AUSTRAC’s regulatory reach from 1 July 2026.

Businesses that may now need to enrol include:

Key dates to know:

Businesses should verify directly with AUSTRAC whether their specific services trigger an enrolment obligation, as the definitions are activity-based, not just profession-based.

Information Required Before AUSTRAC Enrolment

Before you log in to AUSTRAC Online and start your enrolment application, make sure you have the following information ready.

Business Details:

  • Full legal business name and trading name
  • ABN, ACN, or other relevant identifiers
  • Business address and contact details
  • Type of legal entity (company, trust, partnership, sole trader)

Designated Service Information:

  •  A clear list of the designated services your business provides
  • Service categories and subcategories as defined by the AML/CTF Act

Compliance Officer Details:

  • Name and contact information of your appointed AML/CTF Compliance Officer
  • From 31 March 2026, the compliance officer must also meet AUSTRAC’s fit and proper person eligibility criteria. Businesses should keep records showing how the appointee meets these requirements
  • AUSTRAC must be notified of this appointment within 14 days of it occurring

Financial Information (if applicable):

  • If your business earns $100 million or more in Australian operations, you will need to provide 12-month earnings details
  • If you are part of a corporate group, the earnings of all reporting entity members must be included

Reporting Group Information (if applicable):

  • Whether your business is part of a reporting group
  • Lead entity details if applicable

Having all this ready before you begin will save you significant time and reduce the risk of errors in your application.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Prepare for AUSTRAC Enrolment

Follow these seven steps to prepare your business for a smooth AUSTRAC enrolment process.

Step 1 – Confirm You Provide a Designated Service

Start by mapping your business activities against the list of designated services in the AML/CTF Act. Remember: it’s the activity, not just your profession, that triggers the obligation. A conveyancer executing a property purchase is regulated. A property manager collecting rent may not be.

Step 2 – Appoint an AML/CTF Compliance Officer

Every reporting entity must appoint an AML/CTF Compliance Officer at the management level. For small businesses, this is often the owner or a senior manager. For larger organisations, it may be a dedicated compliance role. You must notify AUSTRAC within 14 days of the appointment.

Step 3 – Develop Your AML/CTF Program

AUSTRAC expects you to have an AML/CTF Program in place. Under the reformed framework, the focus has shifted to a risk-based, outcomes-oriented approach rather than a tick-box compliance model. Your program should reflect the actual money laundering, and terrorism financing risks your business faces.

Step 4 – Gather All Required Business Information

Collect the business details, designated service information, financial data, and compliance of officer details outlined in the previous section. Confirm whether your business is part of a reporting group.

Step 5 – Train Your Staff

AUSTRAC expects Tranche 2 entities to have trained staff by 1 July 2026. Your team needs to understand AML/CTF risks, how to conduct customer due diligence (KYC/KYB), and when and how to escalate suspicious matters.

Step 6 – Set Up AUSTRAC Online Access

AUSTRAC enrolment is completed through AUSTRAC Online. If you receive a new user invitation email, follow the instructions to set up your account. If your business has been providing designated services for some time, you may already have an existing account.

Step 7 – Submit Your Enrolment Application

Complete the enrolment form through AUSTRAC Online. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation message with your receipt number and AUSTRAC Account Number (AAN). AUSTRAC will send a confirmation email when your enrolment is finalised. They may contact you for additional information.

Common Mistakes Businesses Make:

Even well-meaning businesses trip up during the AUSTRAC enrolment process. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid:

  • Waiting too long to map designated services – many businesses scramble at the last minute when the enrolment window opens
  • Not appointing a compliance officer early enough – this should happen before or at the time of enrolment, not after
  • Failing to build an AML/CTF Program before enrolling – AUSTRAC expects you to be operationally ready, not just enrolled on paper
  • Incomplete business information – missing ABN details, incorrect entity type, or unclear service categories cause delays
  • Forgetting the 14-day update rule – if any enrolment details change, you must update them within 14 days
  • Assuming profession = obligation – not every lawyer or accountant will need to enrol; it depends on the specific activities they perform

How Syntrico AML Guardian makes your AML Compliance Easier

Manual compliance processes are time-consuming, error-prone, and difficult to scale. As your business grows – or as regulations change – the cracks in manual systems tend to show up at the worst possible times.

Here is why automation is increasingly important for AUSTRAC compliance:

Consistency – automated workflows apply the same rules every time, reducing human error

Speed – KYC and KYB checks that took hours manually can be completed in minutes

Audit trails – every action is logged, making it far easier to demonstrate compliance to AUSTRAC during a review

Scalability – as your customer base grows, your compliance processes grow with it rather than breaking down

Staff efficiency – your team can focus on high-risk decisions and exceptions, rather than routine data entry

The AML/CTF reform framework emphasises a risk-based approach – meaning regulators expect your compliance effort to be proportionate to the risks your business faces. Technology helps you identify, document, and respond to those risks in a structured way.
